Gerunds after Prepositions

The Verb TO GET can be used in different structures and has several meanings




Description: The verb "to get" is one of the most used verbs in English since it has so many meanings that it can make learning difficult to learn. Next, the most common meanings will be explained.

Meaning 1- Get = acquire, receive, take something . It means to come into the possession of something.
Meaning 2 -Get = become, change into a different state

Meaning 3 -Get = arrive or reach a destination

Meaning 4 -Get = bring back or hand something to someone else
Meaning 5 -Get = go through a mental or physical experience 
Meaning 6 -Get = contract an illness or disease



EXAMPLES


He gets $1,000 a year from his father.
Él recibe $ 1,000 por año de su padre.
I only got four hours of sleep last night
Solo tuve cuatro horas de sueño anoche
I get distracted so easily
Me distraigo tan fácilmente
My wife'll kill me if I don't get home soon.

GERUNDS AFTER PREPOSITIONS

Cuando un verbo sigue a una preposición, es necesario emplear el "gerund". Esto también es cierto para determinadas expresiones que acaban con una preposición, por ejemplo "in spite of" o "there's no point in".

In English, if you are going to have a verb after a preposition, the rule is simple- it must ALWAYS be in the gerund form. That is to say that it must always end in “-ing”.
